The UK is going to be struck by Storm Claudia with the Met Office being able to declare amber weather warnings, indicating that there will be a lot of rain which will cause flooding and inconvenience in the country.
The amber warnings will be in operation between midday and midnight on Friday where 50 to 75 mm of rain are expected in Wales and 40 to 60 mm of rain is expected in the East Midlands, east of England, London and Southwest England, northwest England, south-west England, Wales and the West Midlands.
Storm Claudia, named by the Spanish Meteorological Service, is also heading to the UK triggering some 20 flood warnings and 33 flood alerts.
The yellow weather warning of rain has also been announced to go on in the southern region of the country from 6am on Friday. There is currently a yellow rain warning in central, Tayside and Fife, northeast England, northwest England, Southwest Scotland and Strathclyde up until 7pm on Thursday.
Met Office chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday. This rain will become slow moving, and some areas could see up to a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours.
“Much of this will fall in saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding and contributing to the amber warnings we have issued.
“Within the Amber warning areas, some could see in excess of 150mm accumulate during the event, with 60-80 mm fairly widely. Gusty winds in the northwest of England and northwest Wales is an additional hazard, with 60-70 mph gusts possible in exposed places within the warning area”.
The Met Office is warning that there is a high likelihood of fast-flowing or deep floodwater in regions with an amber warning that may lead to life endangering.
The houses and companies are likely to be flooded and the weather service has also notified that the travels will be disrupted and power cuts will be experienced in the affected regions.
The UK weather prediction in the next week is as follows, as given by the Met Office:
Today- The rain will become weaker as it moves up, but a wet start will be experienced across Northern Ireland, part of Scotland and northern England. Colder in the North of Scotland with a sprinkle of showers, otherwise a very fine day everywhere, and pleasant again.
Tonight – There will be a heavy band of rainfall, occassionally, sweeping northwards over the southern and central regions during the night. Elsewhere, clearer colder skies are developing except that they are a few showers away.
Friday – Quite a wet day in England and Wales with strong easterly wind forming. Scotland and Northern Ireland have colder days with sunny intervals and scattered precipitation.
