The Australian Open has suspended play under the heat rule. It is a hot day in Melbourne, and the temperatures have been up to about 38 degrees Celsius, and the players were driven off the courts. The heat stress scale of the Australian Open has now topped at a maximum of 5.
This implies that all the outdoor courts are on hold and will not resume for a duration of over two hours. The games in the arena courts with roofs were also cancelled until the roofs were closed. It implied that Jannik Sinner could walk out of Rod Laver Arena momentarily as he struggled to survive in the harsh weather.
The second-ranked in the world lost the first set only to win the second one on a break down. But the third set had a brutal beginning for Sinner, who received cramps and summoned the trainer.
The
Italy made an early break in the course of the match when the heat stress scale reached 5, and the chair umpire proclaimed that the game would be postponed until the roof was closed to enable the players to play in cool conditions.
It was a lifeline to Sinner, who took advantage of it to get out of court and blow himself out. Cameras provided in the walkways of Rod Laver Arena captured the sight of the two-time former champion coming out of the court, his coach Darren Cahill and his tournament director, Craig Tiley.
Mark Petchey, Brad Stone and Colin Fleming could not believe that Sinner could use the chance to take an ice bath as commentators. However, the world No. 2 got back to the Rod Laver Arena very quickly, and the roof was closed soon.
The organisers of the Australian Open also published a statement about the suspension of the play and gave advice to the visitors present at the location. “The AO Heat Stress Scale is above 5.0,” they wrote. “Play is suspended for all matches and practice on outside courts. The roofs on RLA, MCA and JCA will close and remain closed for the remainder of the match.”
Play on the John Cain arena, where another Italian Lorenzo Musetti is playing against Tomas Machac was also abandoned briefly as the roof was closed. On Margaret Court Arena, Ben Shelton and Valentin Vacherot went out on the track under the roof and will play their whole game in shadier indoor conditions.
Matches in outdoor courts will not be resumed before 5:30 pm local time, and this is announced provisionally by the Australian Open. It was about 3pm because they were stopped.
