Robert Redford and Paul Newman discovered a lofty treasure in Hollywood: A true and enduring friendship
In 2008, when Paul Newman, a long time friend of Robert Redford, died of lung cancer, he was 83 years old, Robert Redford spoke with ABC about their friendship.
It was formed, added, when they both starred in the 1969 blockbuster film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
The connection of playing those characters and enjoying it is what actually started the relationship as Redford said at the time. Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid was a western buddy comedy which was a hybrid of the two genres, the actors played the role of renegade outlaws who were on a train roberry mission but which went wrong. The movie was further awarded four Academy Awards for best original screenplay.
Similar to the relationships of their attached characters in the movie, what would come after in real life was decades of love and admiration between the two, who would in reality have easily been competitors had they not been the Hollywood heartthrobs turned leading man.
According to a statement issued by his publicist Cindi Berger, chairman and chief executive officer of Rogers and Cowan PMK, Redford passed away Tuesday at his home in Sundance in the Utah mountains, where he loved spending his time with those he loved.
Similar to Newman, Redford started his acting career on the stage before shifting to the silver screen. Both of them were very serious with what they were doing and according to Redford, it was his talent which made Newman go out of his way to have the younger star cast the Sundance Kid as his Butch Cassidy.
Their friendliness brought them into another film that is nowadays regarded as a classic, 1973, “The Sting,” which also strengthened their friendship.
They both desired to be regarded as professionals more than their good appearance.
They were both loyal family mem and at some point they resided within the same state of Connecticut about a mile apart. Both of them also turned their interest into philanthropy as Redford was concerned with the environment and independent filmmaking, and Newman established a food company called Newman ‘s Own where all the profits were given to charity.
Once Redford commented on the dedication that Newman has put into The Hole in. The Wall Gang Camp, the first camp that Newman created in 1988 to provide assistance to chronically I’ll children.
