Georgia Congresswoman Majorjie Taylor Greene has stated that she will step down, which is a surprise to the high-profile Republican a few days after a public confrontation with President Donald Trump.
Greene, one of the Trump Maga stars in the US political scene, released a video message on social media in which she said she would retire to Congress on 5 January 2026.
One of the most vocal supporters of Trump in the Congress was the Republican, and her unyielding demand to release files concerning the deceased paedophile Jeffrey Epstein has caused a sour breakdown between her and the President, who has labeled her a traitor since then.
“I refused to be a “battered wife” hoping it all goes away and gets better,” she said in the video.
In response to her resignation, Trump who had threatened to assist a Republican challenger to oust Greene, expressed it as great news to the country in an interview with ABC News.
Greene said in the announcement that she did “not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms.”
Trump had months before contending that the matter was a distraction created by his political critics to take attention away from the accomplishments of his administration.
“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for,” Greene said in her resignation letter.
In response, Trump last week wrote a series of posts on social media, referring to Greene as a traitor and wacky. She has to be thrown out of office, he declared, and he would support and opponent to her in Congress.
Greene went through a list of political accomplishments in the video where she announced her resignation. In her letter of resignation, she said that the remarks of Trump were hurtful.
Although she declared her exit from the House of Representatives, US media reports have shown Greene to have been interested in a state level- as either Georgia governor or for a Senate seat.
Trump and Greene were close allies prior to their open rift in the promotion of the America first agenda. She also went on the campaign trail with him and was among the Republicans who vehemently criticized Trump regarding his false assertions that he had won the 2020 presidential election with Joe Biden.
Her resignation will further reduce the difference in the Republican dominated House of Representatives who have very few more seats compared to Democrats. The power to control the chamber will be on the docket in midterm elections next November 2026.
