BBC crime drama, Silent Witness, the episode on Monday night was more of a shock than many anticipated. Jack Hodgson, a loyal forensic scientist portrayed by David Caves, found himself in the middle of a murder case that was his own. This episode, the sixth and final one of the second season, was a dramatic twist to the series as Jack, living with the feeling of guilt after a bar fight, turned himself in to the police when the man he had a fight with later was found dead on the examination table of his girlfriend, Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox).
It was also a twist to the show as the 30th anniversary of Silent Witness is being celebrated, and this fact contributes to the fact that the show has become a timeless classic. The audience has, over the years, been able to see the progression of Jack from a new, brash individual to a deeply human, complex character. However, when the newest plot was developed, a great number of viewers were left wondering: Is this the end of Jack Hodgson?
The next episode, Grace of God, has indicated a worrying trend in Jack. The dearest forensic scientist is involved in an inebriated pub brawl this very night, only to have issues spiral out of control when the man he punched after the fight is found dead.
Speaking about what his character goes through in this series, David said: “Jack and Nikki are settling into a new home in Birmingham and getting used to The Bowman Centre, trying to find a bit of balance.
“Jack is still the same stubborn, sarcastic fella, just with a bit more self-awareness. He’s older and more mature. He’s more affected by the trials and tribulations of his work, and we see that play out majorly in this series. Jack is really tested in one story, a very personal odyssey he must go on alone.”
It is in the dramatic instalment that we see Jack struggling with the idea of having to cope with the fact that he feels like he is the one who killed this man, and when he gets behind bars, things only get worse. Jack is in grave danger, says the Mirror.
The final part of the Silent Witness, which is now available on the BBC iPlayer, brings a disastrous twist to Jack, with his wife, Nikki Alexander, frantically trying to defend him in the best manner she can.
The question is, though – would she arrive in time, or will Jack meet a yet more dismal end?
Silent Witness can be viewed in BBC iPlayer.
