Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show has been pulled from ABC after the host commented on the murder of the conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. A spokesperson for the Disney-owned network said in a statement, “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be pre-empted definitely”.
Kimmel did not speak on the BBC as he emerged shortly afterwards from the television studio in Los Angeles. Kimmel said on his show that the MAGA gang was trying to achieve political points from Kirk’s murder.
The president of Nextstar’s broadcasting division, Andrew Alford, said that Mr. Jimmy Kimmel’s comments about the killing of Clarlie Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time during their national political discourse. He further added that they do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, and values of the local communities in which they are located.
Trump celebrated the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live by ABC, calling it “Great news for America”. Trump posted on Truth Social, he mocked Kimmel as “ratings-challenged” and having “zero talent”. At the same time, he praised ABC for finally having the bravery to do what has to be done. Further, he added that the leaves of Jimmy and Seth, two total losers on Fake News NBC.
Trump has pointed out Kimmel’s low ratings and said that they were worse than ever, compared to Colbert.
During the Monday night monologue, Kimmel stated, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it“.
Immediately after the comment, critics started criticizing Kimmel for being insensitive.
Charlie Kirk, a prominent ally of USA president Donald Trump, was shot dead the previous week during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. According to reports, a 22-year-old, Tyler Robinson, fired a rifle from the rooftop. Immediately, Charlie Kirk was dead with a single shot to his neck. Robinson has now been charged with murder and is under judicial custody.
On the day Kirk was shot, Kimmel accessed Instagram to condemn the murder and send love to the conservative activist’s family. However, authorities have not recognized the exact motive of Kirk’s fatal shooting on September 10.
Tyler Robinson, the suspect, was not registered to any political party and did not cast his vote in the 2022 and 2024 elections.
However, Disney and ABC have not provided any further information about the suspension, and Kimmel’s spokesperson has not commented further.
