Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic sneak-previewed during the first few minutes of The Game Awards 2025, indicating possibly one of the most glorified RPG eras in the franchise. It is under production at Arcanaut Studios and being led by Casey Hudson, who directed the first two games of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy.
His presence immediately puts the project in the framework of a real spiritual successor to the KOTOR, even though it does not bear the name of the series.
Star Wars is a mythic science-fiction series that is set in a distant galactic world, combining great space fights, multifaceted characters, and the supernatural Force. Having been released in 1977, it has since turned into a cultural phenomenon that includes films, TV series, books, and games.
Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic, as the official description states, is a narrative-based, single-player action RPG where the players are in the position of a Force user, who is exploring the galaxy on the brink of rebirth.
Disney Games Group president Jay Ong stated that the company collaborated with Casey Hudson due to his passion for creating something new and his leadership in creating something groundbreaking. He also commented on the passion of Arcanaut Studios for creating deep storytelling and world-building.
The VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, Douglas Reilly, described the Old Republic period as a beloved and rich part of the Star Wars universe and indicated that the teams are taking a new, never-before-told story with this project. Both executives indicated that Arcanaut has a huge vision that will make the fans thrilled, and more will be revealed.
“Working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was one of the defining experiences of my career,” Hudson said. “With Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, we’re telling a completely new and different story with everything we’ve learned since- crafting an adventure about choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark. It’s a dream come true to once again collaborate with Lucasfilm Games.”
“We look for partners who have the drive and the leadership to build something groundbreaking, and that’s what we see in Casey,” said Jay Ong, head of Disney Games Group. Under Casey’s direction, Arcanaut Studios is assembling a team with a deep passion for storytelling and building immersive worlds. Their vision for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is exactly the kind of ambitious, high-quality experience we want to deliver for our players.”
