At the beginning of October, when the trailer of the hockey romance series, Heated Rivalry, by Crave was released, it provoked instant attention and excitement among audiences. Through this unexpected success of an unexpected hit, based on the popular novels of Halifax writer Rachel Reid, it was soon the most successful original series on the streaming platform, and it created a buzz that was felt not only in Canada but also globally.
The storyline of the show revolves around the turbulent romance of two ice hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, who are played by actors Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie. Their shows have gained attention on a global scale, and Crave has managed to get distribution rights with streaming sites like HBO Max to the audiences of the U.S., where fans in Ireland to Singapore can get indulged in the romantic drama.
The casting decisions that Jenny Lewis and Sara Kay, the Toronto-based casting directors, made made the difference in the success of Heated Rivalry as they managed to find the right two individuals to play the characters. Lewis said that to cast the leads, one had to find actors who would not just be able to interpret the chemistry and complexity of the characters but also meet the strenuous requirements of ice skating.
Lewis also noted that there were certain demands of the characters, and they were quite a hard task. They wanted a brooding and wild Russian or a gentle and tight-wound Canadian, which also emphasised that cultural authenticity was necessary.
In reference to the search for Shane, Lewis said: “We didn’t have as much of a response on that character worldwide.” But they finally located both of the actors in their area, and this, according to Lewis, was a stroke of fortune on their part.
The castings were quite numerous, cutting across several countries and focused on authenticity in reference to the background of the characters. The casting directors were impressed by how they got along with Williams and Storrie when they met. Neither actors were not experienced hockey players, but Storrie had the required athleticism because he had been a trained gymnast and had ice experience in the past, which was combined with the skating ability of Williams.
The popularity of the series is a good sign of its future, as the second season is already greenlit in the context of the universal positive response of the audience. With the show still winning the hearts and breaking the barriers, it is expected that the story of those who created it and starred in it is going to remain one of the important stories in the world of television today.
