US Vice President JD Vance has sparked a major controversy with comments about his wife, Usha Vance, who is of Indian origin and a Hindu. SPeaking at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi, Vance expressed hope that his wife would one day embrace Christianity like him. The remarks quickly caused a stir in media and social networks.
Vance shared that Usah grew up in a Hindu family, though “not a particularly religious one.” He said when they met, both of them would have considered themselves agnostic or atheist. The couple met at Yale University and married in an interfaith ceremony in 2014, blending Hindu and Catholic traditions. They have three children, all raised in the Christian faith, with two attending a Christian school.
At the event, the Vice President said, ” Most Sundays Usha will come with me to church.” He added, ” Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that i was moved by in church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel.” Despite this, Vance conceded, “If she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will, so that doesn’t cause a problem for me.”
His comments drew swift criticism. Mansy accused him of hypocrisy and disrespect toward Usha’s Hindu heritage. Indian-American pointed out that Usha has publicly acknowledged her Hindu roots multiple times, even having a traditional Vedic Hindu wedding ritual. Critics argued Vance’s description of her as agnostic or atheist did not align with her declarations of Hindu identity.
Kanwal Sibal, formar indian Foreign Secreatary, called Vance’s remarks problematic, questioning where the values of religious freedom had gone. Others on social platforms accused Vance of pandering to a Christian nationalist audience, sacrificing respect for his wife’s faith to appeal to certain voter bases.
Amid the backlash, JD Vance responded strongly, saying the attacks on his family and his wife’s religion were “disgusting.” He affirmed that Usha has no plans to convert to Christianity and called her “the most amazing blessing” of his life. Vance emphasized that their interfaith marriage is strong and that people’s curiosity about it is understandable, as he is a public figure.
The controversy unfolds as JD Vance, who converted to Catholicism himself in 2019 after meeting Usha, prepares for a possible run in this 2028 US presidential race. His remarks at the rally have ignited a heated debate about faith, political strategy, and respect for diverse religious backgrounds in America.
Usha Vance’s faith and identity have become a central topic, highlighting the challenges that interfaith couples in public life face when personal beliefs intersect with politics and public opinion. Her role in supporting JD Vance’s return to faith has been publicly acknowledged before, making this current controversy even more striking.
