The Atlanta Hawks have made a major decision to sell four-time All-Star Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange with CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, multiple sources reported. It is the final episode for Young, who is leaving the Hawks after over seven years of service, to take a position of lead guard in the Wizards, which is located in the capital of the country.
Wizards’ front office, under the leadership of Michael Winger and Will Dawkins, believes that Young is a very important factor in their endeavour to develop a competitive team around the young talent that they have. This change is in lieu of the fact that the franchise is seeking the stability it is seeking.
To the Hawks, the trade marks a fresh start as they seek to exploit the promise of a new crop of players such as Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander,-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu and Zaccharie Risacher. By adding McCollum as a new player and leader on the field, and can enjoy his contract that expires in 30.6 million. Also, the move will provide the Hawks with additional financial flexibility, allowing them to pursue high-profile players, including the Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis, as they head to the trade deadline.
At 18-21 in the Eastern Conference, Atlanta has not been able to get by with a 2-8 record with Young in the lineup. The agents of Young had been in continual negotiations with the general manager of Hawks, Onsi Saleh, especially after the team decided not to propose a contract extension to Young.
Young has a further $95 million contract through the 2026-2037 season in addition to the off-season player option. The Wizards will also gain financially since the acquisition of Young gives them their roster $30 million below the luxury tax cap and also provides the organisation with more opportunities to make further adjustments to the roster.
The challenges Young has encountered concerning injury this season have seen him deal with a right MCL sprain and a recent right quad contusion, which has seen him miss the past six games.
In spite of these disappointments, Young has made a legacy in Atlanta, where he was the franchise leader in three pointers made (1295) and assists (4837). He also made contributions like taking the Hawks to the playoffs three times, including the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
Young is averaging 19.3 points, 8.9 assists and a 41.5 field shooting percentage during the present season which is far beneath the output levels he had previously. Conversely, McCollum has recorded 18.8 points and 45.4 field shooting, so he would be a nice fit for the Hawks as they embark on a new form of playing.
