On Friday, President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of former Republican lawmaker George Santos. Santos was convicted of committing wire fraud and identity theft to spend on lavish vacations and Botox injections with money stolen from campaign donors.
Trump wrote a lengthy post on his Truth Social site on Friday, “George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time, and by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated”.
He further added that at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to always vote Republican.
Trump added, “Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Snatos from prison, IMMEDIATELY”.
George Snatos, the former United States representative for New York’s third congressional district, is known for fabricating his education, career, and personal history. He had his 87-month prison sentence for fraud, commuted by President Donald Trump in October 2025.
The former lawmaker was only the sixth in the United States’ history to be ejected from Congress, following a damning ethics report in 2023.
The former lawmaker admitted to stealing the identities of 11 people, including his own family members, is serving his sentence in a minimum security jail in New Jersey.
When Santos was sentenced, a judge told him that he got elected with his words, most of which were lies.
Reportedly, Santos cried in court and begged for an apology, and said he could not rewrite the past, but he can control the road ahead.
In the Truth post, Trump justified the move by criticizing a Democratic lawmaker, Senator Richard Blumenthal, whom he blamed for fabricating his US military service.
Santos’ downfall started in 2022, after the New Times published an investigation revealing the congressman had lied about his CV, including a university degree and working for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.
Earlier this week, Santos wrote an open letter to Trump in the South Shore Press Newspaper, repeating his appeal to be pardoned.
He wrote, “Mr. President, I am not asking for sympathy. I am asking for fairness -for the chance to rebuild.”
In the letter, he further added that he knows he had made mistakes in the past. He had faced his share of consequences, and he took full responsibility for his actions.
The President has issued pardons to at least two other former Republican lawmakers since his return to his office in January.
Trump wrote in his Truth Social post, “Good luck, George, have a great life!”
