The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is a new Netflix documentary that has rekindled the excitement surrounding one of the most horrifying true-crime stories in the cycling community.
The movie reexamines the life and horrible slaying of the up-and-coming American cyclist Moriah Wilson, and takes a look into the complicated dealings between Kaitlin Armstrong and Colin Strickland.
The documentary, directed by an Emmy-winning filmmaker Marina Zenovich, premieres on 3 April 2026 and provides an extremely personal story of Wilson and his work and unfortunate demise
Wilson, or rather Mo, was a 25-year-old cycling star whose career was soaring high. She started to ride gravel and mountain bikes and soon gained the great achievement and recognition in her new sport as in the former one: after becoming a competitive skier, she switched to biking and gained victories in major events quite quickly.
Her bright future was, however, interrupted on 11 May 2022 as she was shot dead in Austin, Texas.
A complex love triangle came out in the case. Temporarily, Wilson had a romantic relationship with a cyclist, Colin Strickland, with whom he shared a break in his intermittent relationship with Kaitlin Armstrong. Despite the break-up, the two had continued to be in touch with each other, an aspect that was reported to make Armstrong extremely jealous.
Investigators state that Armstrong followed Wilson to the apartment she was staying in and shot her soon after she was dropped by Strickland.
This was followed by a melodramatic international manhunt. Armstrong escaped the United States, traded her passport with one of her sisters and even had plastic surgery in a bid to avoid being caught.
She escaped to Costa Rica, where she was arrested after 43 days on the run and reached the US by extradition. In 2023, she was found guilty of first-degree murder and given a 90-year prison sentence.
The documentary does not only focus on the crime but also on its aftermath. It also includes the emotional interview with the family and friends of Wilson, which emphasises her personality, success, and the gap caused by her death. It also looks at the long-term effects on Strickland, whose career failed tremendously as a result of the tragedy, and then stopped competing in cycling.
Focusing on the story of Wilson instead of the news about the crime, the new release of Netflix as a true-crime show is supposed to pay tribute to her legacy and unravel all the harmful outcomes of jealousy and violence.
