A few places in the world have been deemed to be very dangerous, and tourists who visit them have been advised to take safety measures that they must seek to reduce the risk of accidents. The Foreign Office has issued a warning to tourists by making a list of the 55 places that are on the so-called “do not travel list”.

Anyone travelling to such destinations will be getting a refund of their holiday cover, i.e. in case anything goes amiss, they will not have anyone to assist them. The officials also warn that they are putting their own lives at risk. Unless you need the services of a consul locally, you will find it very hard to access them.

In particular countries, the Foreign Office has also been advising against all but essential travel, so you should re-examine any plans to make an overseas holiday. The Foreign Office advises: “Get advice and warnings about travel abroad, including entry requirements, safety and security, health risks and legal differences.”
    .
It explained further: “No foreign travel can be guaranteed safe. FCDO publishes travel advice to help you decide if it’s safe enough for you to travel to a particular destination. In some instances, we also give information about how to reduce the risks you may face there. All environments contain some level of risk, and you should consider what precautions you should take.

“You must take personal responsibility for your own travel. Only you can decide whether you should travel to a country or stay there, and what activities to take part in.”

Individuals can be subject to various dangers because of their:

    • Gender
    • Ethnic Background
    • Sexuality
    • Health.

The Foreign Office also offers general information on a particular type of traveller to guide you on some of these dangers. The FCDO occasionally officially recommends against non-essential or unnecessary travel to a specific nation by British nationals. It said: “Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from FCDO. We only advise against travel if we think the risk to British nationals is unacceptably high. For example, this could be due to armed conflict, civil unrest, military coups, natural disasters and disease outbreaks.

FCDO advises against all travel to the following countries:

    • Afghanistan
    • Belarus
    • Burkina Faso
    • Haiti
    • Iran
    • Mali
    • Niger
    • Russia
    • South Sudan
    • Syria
    • Yemen.

FCDO advises against all travel to parts:

    • Algeria
    • Armenia
    • Azerbaijan
    • Benin
    • Burundi
    • Cambodia
    • Cameroon
    • Central African Republic
    • Chad
    • Congo
    • Côte d’Ivoire
    • Democratic Republic of the Congo
    • Djibouti
    • Egypt
    • Eritrea
    • Ethiopia
    • Georgia
    • India
    • Indonesia
    • Iraq
    • Israel
    • Jordan
    • Kenya
    • Lebanon
    • Libya
    • Mauritania
    • Moldova
    • Mozambique
    • Myanmar
    • Nigeria
    • Pakistan
    • Philippines
    • Saudi Arabia
    • Somalia
    • Sudan
    • Palestine
    • Thailand
    • Togo
    • Tunisia
    • Turkey
    • Ukraine
    • Venezuela
    • Western Sahara.

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to North Korea as the security situation can quickly change there with no advance warning.
