NYC mayoral election: Trump’s adversary Zohran Mamdani secured crucial victory; becomes New York’s first Muslim mayor

Zohran Mamdani, the political opponent of US President Donald Trump, was elected New York City Mayor on Tuesday, overcoming the former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. 

The youngest and the first Muslim mayor of New York City will be the 34-year-old, Mamdani. He will succeed Mayor Eric Adams, who withdrew his re-election campaign in September, but left his name on the ballot. 

Mamdani, a state assembly member representing Queens, had joined the race a year ago as little more than a protest candidate, witha very slim resume and virtually no citywide name.

The turnout reached over 2 million voters, the largest number to turn up in one of the mayoral elections in the city since 1969.

In the meantime, Trump waved off the win of Mamdani with the argument that one of the reasons why republicans lost the polls was the US government shutdown.

Using the quotes of pollsters, Trump stated, “Trump wasn’t on the ballot, and shutdown, were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections tonight.”

Trump vs Mamdani

The local election became a one on one battle between Trump and Mamdani. Mamdani has been called by Trump on multiple occasions a Communistic lunatic and a disaster on the verge of happening. Mamdani, in his turn, in a recent interview with The Good Liars said that he would “work with the president for the same of New Yorkers” but “not be cowed”. “If you want to make life more difficult for New Yorkers,” he said, “then I’ll be there to fight you.”

Trump also encouraged the people to support Cuomo and prevent the successful performance of Mamdani. “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice,” Trump wrote. ‘You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job.” He then threatened that, in case Mamdani is elected, the federal funds to New York would be endangered.

Trump also indicated that he would cut off New York federal funds in case Mamdani passes the election. He also supported former New York State governor Andrew Cuomo to the highest city position.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!” Trump wrote in a post.

The job of the mayor is of great significance. The mayor directs its services such as policing to education in a city that is visited by 64 million each year with annual budget of about 116 billion.
